As a young adult in the 90’s, whenever I came out to someone the usual reaction that I would get was the phrase: “but, you don’t look gay...”, as if to be considered queer I had to have some sort of visible sign declaring my sexuality.
At the young age of 15, I was taken to conversion therapy (practices intended to forcibly change a person's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression). The psychiatrist sitting across their desk from me during a session told me: “what you have is considered by the American Psychiatric Association as a mental disorder but, no worries, it can be treated and we are here to help you get better.” I never went back to her sessions again and, to this day, my brain has repressed that memory and I can’t seem to remember how I managed to avoid continuing with the therapy.
Maricón is a pejorative term that could be translated as faggot in English, but its use is more widespread and accepted in Spanish-speaking societies. As a child, hearing my father use this insult constantly whenever he was upset at someone affected my self-esteem and made me develop a strong rejection towards him.
